Be Inspired to create your own slice of interior architecture with a bespoke spiral staircase
The interior of your home can be a decadent as you want – or your budget allows! Some people prefer to spend the lion’s share of their renovation budget on installing a kitchen, with all the latest gadgets and gizmos.
Some people prefer to make their design statement with the lay out of the house or maybe, you like the idea of a themed bathroom or other statement. Either way, we all have different ideas and opinions on what style suit us and our homes, and for many, practicality is one of them.
But, if you are renovating a property or building one from scratch, did you know you too can have an interior design architectural statement? For many people, this is exactly what spiral staircases can offer their Nottingham property.
Be inspired
There are many spiral staircases built across the globe that can offer inspiration to those seeking to design and install their own. But the most famous must be the spiral staircase of Loretto Chapel. Two mysteries are still unsolved to a certain extent – who built it and the structure of it.
The Loretto Chapel was completed in 1878 but there was no way to access the choir loft, 22 feet above the ground floor. A variety of local carpenters were asked to come up with a solution; the only on proffered was a wooden ladder, as a staircase would ‘interfere’ with the small chapel space.
The nuns fell into prayer and on the 9th day, a man appeared at the chapel door, with his donkey and tool box, looking for work. Months later, the story goes, a delightful spiral staircase was complete and the man, and his donkey, disappeared – he simply left without thanks, it is said, and pay.
What contributes to this story is the final product, still on display today. The magnificence of the structure still baffles people today for, unlike other spiral staircases, there is no obvious support – spiral staircases in Nottingham properties have a supporting central column but this staircase does not.
It is also said the staircase in Loretto Chapel is built without nails, just wooden pegs and careful skill and craft. The subject of many films and TV programmes, the mystery behind how this staircase supports itself and the weight placed upon it still remains today.
No one can deny its magnificence; even with the obvious central supporting column, spiral staircases at Nottingham properties are no less magnificent. Would you like to discover the delights of your very own architectural masterpiece?
