Will they break?
No! Toughened curved glass is fast becoming a popular feature in many building projects, from ‘industrial’ buildings such as state of the art office complexes through to domestic properties. Toughened glass is used in windows for example, and is also a material robust and strong enough to be used as glass staircases.
What are the benefits of a glass staircase?
As well as the obvious WOW! factor and style that it adds to your home, the main benefit with glass staircases is the amount of light that it can bounce around a room. In fact, glass staircases can make even the smallest amount of light illuminate the room.
How are the constructed?
There are many different designs of glass staircases; the more elaborate and those requiring intricate structural, technical input will cost considerably more than others. A traditional style glass staircase has three main components:
- Stringers are put on both sides of the glass staircase and are the sloping columns of the staircase. These are important as they provide structural strength to the unit.
- Tread are the stepping area of the glass staircase.
- The riser is the vertical section in between the footing areas that link each stair together.
Working with a wood staircase can present its own demands but a glass staircase – the design and most importantly, the installation are best left to a professional. Miscalculations of measurements cannot be rectified once the glass is cut etc. and so a professional company, such as Continental Stairs, will now which difficult areas to look for.
Cantilevered design maybe...?
This bespoke design sees only the glass tread visible, with the final design giving the appearance of each tread being glued or stuck into the wall. Glass staircases can also utilise a huge array of handrails and other safety features.
